Arnis-Escrima-Kali

The National Martial Art of the Philippines, it is characterized as sabre play using wooden canes. Practitioners are noted for their ability to fight with weapons or empty hands interchangeably. Weapons-training takes precedence because of the it edge gives in real fights.

The word “bagani” traces its Austronesian roots back to the Proto-Malayo-Polynesian word “barani,” which means “hero or war-leader,” also “dare to do.” If something is worth doing, we dare to do it. Train Kali-Arnis with us.

Bagani Kali Combatives Canada follows the Lightning Scientific Arnis system. It revolves around the concept of intercepting and redirecting attacks and blind-siding the opponent by going to the off-side and blanketing him with a barrage of continuous strikes while the checking hand constantly pushes, presses and controls his opponent putting him in a constant state of imbalance.

The FMA or Filipino Martial Arts, like many other martial arts, is a system with numerous branches. Depending on the major island, where the art is practiced, the instructor may call it Arnis (Luzon), Eskrima(Visayas) or Kali(Mindanao) The term Arnis, came from the term “Arnes de mano,” meaning “armour of the hands.

Adapted Taekwon-Do Program

Inclusive Special Needs Course

On first glance you might ask what Taekwondo could offer children with disabilities. Though it requires physical participation, Taekwon-do is not just about kicking and punching. It is also about developing character and inner-strength, self-discipline and self-reliance. For a committed student, with disabilities or not, personal growth and development will always be a welcome benefit.

Adapted training is integrated to allow adapted students to learn from their abled peers. THESE ABILITIES MATTER. All it takes is patience and care.

Since 2015, DSRF and DSATaekwondo have been partners in promoting inclusivity in Taekwon-Do. Mr. Andaya has championed the inclusion of adapted taekwon-do in competitions. Starting with its inclusion at BC Provincials in 2013, the adapted event became part of history 10 years later when its first champions were recornized at the 2023 Canadian National Championships.

DSA Martial Arts is a participating venue of the Access 2 Card program of Easter Seals Canada. Caregivers of card members may train with their charge for free. The additional 1-on-1 support will help the student integrate with the class faster.

Harmony Program

Over Fifty and Fit!

Launched in 2015 by the ITF, this programme is based on integrating those aged 50 and older into ITF Taekwon-Do. The harmony program goal is to improve physical health, coordination, memory, quality of life and sense of security for Elderly people. The name is referring to the harmony between body and mind that practitioners achieve during the program.

Taekwon-Do adapts to what you can do and enhances it. Don't be shy, give it a try!

Our instructors are IHC certified. Although most of the instructors are younger, they have trained to understand how the "Avance-aged" works. Let your body tell you your own pace. It's never too late to practice Taekwon-Do.

DID YOU KNOW THAT... In South Korea, the most common way to say grandma in Korean is 할머니 (halmeoni), also often spelled as “halmoni.” This specifically means grandma in English. Is it a coincidence that this program is meant for senior aged students?

OUR CLASSES

We offer two exceptional Programs for Self-Defense. Taekwon-Do for unarmed defense, Kali-Arnis for Weapons-based defense.

 Taekwon-Do Programs

ITF Taekwon-Do is our choice of style for unarmed self-defense. It is literally the “art of kicking and punching”. Tae kwon do is characterized by the extensive use of high standing and jump kicks as well as punches and is practiced for sport, self-defense, and spiritual development.

♦ The Little Dragons Program (Age 4-6 years old) Experience an introduction to taekwon-do in this fun filled, fast-paced class designed for your preschooler! This class promotes inner strength while increasing confidence in physical and social abilities. Students learn new skills through gameplay as well as formal ITF Taekwon-do instruction.

♦ The ITF Program (Age 7 and Up) This 10-level belt system is based on the teachings of the founder of Taekwon-do General Choi Hong Hi. We practice the Chang Hun Style of Taekwon-do which is also called the traditional style. Students learn new skills as they go up the ranks from white belt to black belt. Classes are separated by age for sparring and by belt level for patterns.

♦ The Adapted Special Needs Program (For Students with Disabilities) On the surface there appears to be an inherent contradiction between a physical disability and martial art. However, this view fails to recognize the underlying philosophical orientation of this martial art and the advances it permit to personal growth and development when commitment is applied. The special needs program is slightly modified to adapt to the needs of the students.
